A PSP union and two GNR associations are holding a protest at the Assembly of the Republic today to denounce the “history of failed trades over recent times” in relation to salaries in the security forces.

The initiative, which is organized by the Independent Union of Police Officers (SIAP), the National Association of Guard Sergeants (ANSG) and the Independent Socio-Professional Association of the Guard (ASPIG), foresees a concentration near the side door of the Assembly of the Republic. Afterwards, they will mark silent presence in the parliament galleries to watch the debate that begins the discussion of the State Budget for 2026.

The president of SIAP, Carlos Torres, told Lusa that the objective of this protest is to appeal to the Government to start looking at the police in a different way, making the profession more attractive through increase in wages.

These three structures, which have not signed the July 2024 agreement on the increase in risk allowanceregret that the Government did not start meetings to negotiate what was established in that document, namely the review of the remuneration status and careers of PSP and GNR members. These Negotiations did not advance under the previous Government, according to the structures of the PSP and GNR.

“Until now we have not been called for negotiations, just meetings”stated Carlos Torres, stressing that the Minister of Internal Administration, Maria Lúcia Amaral, demonstrates “a lack of political will to value the police career” and insists “on postponing fundamental decisions, which leaves the police in an increasingly deeper abyss”.

A ANSWER I had already considered “a clear breach” of the Government to the agreement signed more than 15 months ago with the police, regretting that the Minister of Internal Administration “does not give guarantees” about the problems.

Since September, Maria Lúcia Amaral has been individually receiving PSP unions and GNR associations to begin the negotiation process that had been agreed in July 2024, when it was established the phased increase of the risk supplement by 300 euros by 2026.

On these points, which were established in the agreement, “there is still no progress”, he lamented, maintaining that “there is a feeling that expectations have been disappointed”.
