I was a kid of 11 or 12 years old, but I remember well the fascination I had with Admiral Pinheiro de Azevedo, Prime Minister of the last provisional government, attacked by the revolutionary left from the first day in office. After the siege of Parliament, tired of being kidnapped, he went to tell President Costa Gomes that the government was going on strike. Two weeks before the 25th of November, at a large rally in Terreiro do Paço, with Soares and Sá Carneiro, he once again made history for the way he remained calm in the face of burning flags and gas thrown at some protesters: “it’s just smoke, the people are serene”. He earned the nickname “fearless admiral” and that is how he presented himself in the 1976 presidential elections, where the best he achieved was third place with around 700 thousand votes. Many more than the Christian Democracy Party that it once led would ever achieve. As a kid, I went to one of his rallies in Maia, just to see up close that military-politician who had so fascinated me with his physical courage but also with his courage to always say what he thought.
