Despite boasting about having stopped eight wars in eight months and having launched all kinds of pressure, Donald Trump has been left without the prize he most wanted: the Nobel Peace Prize. The decision was announced this Friday by the president of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Joergen Watne Frydnes. The jury has recognized Machado, antithesis of Nicolás Maduro, for his “tireless work in promoting the democratic rights of the people of Venezuela and for his fight to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
The five experts met for the last time on Monday, two days before Trump announced the signing of the agreement between Israel and Hamas for the release of the hostages and the implementation of a ceasefire in the Palestinian eclave. Even if they were aware of the progress of the negotiations, it is quite unlikely that the Republican president’s diplomatic milestone would have precipitated a decision that normally brews for months. The polls only gave him a 4% chance.
The secretary of the committee, Kristian Berg Harpviken, who participates in the deliberations although without the right to vote, had already hinted in advance that Trump would have a difficult time: “This award is awarded primarily for work performed in 2024 and previous years, not because of the last weeks or months,” he confirmed to the Norwegian public broadcaster. Although these statements nominate Trump as a candidate for next year’s edition, the members of the Norwegian Committee may not have welcomed giving the award to a president who has decided to bomb the uranium enrichment program of a country with nuclear capabilities (Iran), who has launched a fight against drug trafficking by attacking boats in the Caribbean and threatening to launch a military operation to overthrow a “terrorist” (Venezuela) or that he has deployed the Army in his own home to take control of the cities in which his political rivals govern.
