When Trump signed a security agreement with Ukraine, he made it a condition for Zelensky to hand over Donbass to Putin

Donald Trump’s pressure to end the war in Ukraine has put Volodymyr Zelensky between a rock and a hard place. One of the conditions the Trump administration has put forward for signing the security guarantee agreement is that it seek to ratify a peace deal that would require Russia to cede Donbass, the eastern region of the country where Kiev controls about 20 percent.

Washington has been bolstering Ukraine’s security, sending additional weapons and anti-aircraft defense equipment to ward off new Russian aggression, and is supporting Kiev’s withdrawal from parts of the Donbass it controls.

On Sunday, Zelenskiy confirmed that the security clearance document was “100 percent ready” and that he hoped Trump would set a date and place for its approval. However, the President of Ukraine has opened up the possibility of a “free economic zone” in Donbas in recent weeks, but has repeatedly reiterated that any peace deal must respect the territorial integrity of his country.

Last week’s tripartite talks in Abu Dhabi found that territorial issues remain the biggest sticking point in ending hostilities. Ukraine’s mandate means that it will not withdraw its troops unless the Ukrainian armed forces leave their positions in Donetsk region and receive security guarantees.
