The arrival of a US aircraft carrier in the Caribbean has sparked concern in Venezuela. The government under President Nicolas Maduro has announced that it will prepare its armed forces in the event of a US invasion or military attack. Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino explained that preparations include a massive mobilization of ground, air, sea and missile forces. Police, militias and vigilante groups should also be involved.

This announcement comes amid the arrival of the Gerald R Ford Carrier Strike Group, which has arrived in the Caribbean with over 4,000 sailors and tactical aircraft. The U.S. government has also moved troops to areas near the Caribbean in recent weeks, including Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago, to conduct exercises and other operations.

The Trump administration justifies these troop movements with the need to disrupt the illegal drug trade and protect the homeland. At the same time, Maduro is accused of orchestrating the activities of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, which has little presence in the United States. Maduro and his allies, however, accuse the USA of imperialist intentions.

However, experts doubt whether Venezuela is able to withstand a possible US military attack. Despite the Maduro government’s efforts to demonstrate military preparedness, staff shortages and outdated equipment could pose a problem. As the government uses possible U.S. intervention to mobilize support, Maduro is also grappling with growing discontent at home and increasing diplomatic isolation after a disputed election in 2024.
