I’ve always thought that insects deserve more recognition, so I was excited to catch a circus performance dedicated to the little critters at London’s Royal Albert Hall, passing through on its way to European venues.

EGGfrom Cirque du Soleil, is named after Portuguese word for egg. It’s a simple story about a quirky fly who brings an egg into a bustling ecosystem and tries to win a ladybug’s love with the help of an insect clown. But what he lacks in plot, he makes up for in amazing acrobatics.

In one spectacle, a snake spider (pictured) balances its entire body on a stick held in its mouth. In another, ants juggle fruit using only their feet. Then, in the gritty finale of the first half, the acrobats throw each other with extraordinary precision at great height. Another standout moment is the crickets climbing up and down the wall on the trampoline.

This is a show that will entertain the whole family – and hopefully improve our appreciation of the insects that share our world.
