LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The dark winter months in the world’s higher latitudes can trigger seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in up to a tenth of the population. Scientists are investigating whether bright light could be effective as a therapy for this form of depression. Initial results suggest that light therapy could help not only with SAD, but also with other forms of depression.

The winter months often bring a gloomy mood in higher latitudes, which can lead to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in many people. This form of depression is exacerbated by the long nights and lack of daylight. Scientists suspect that a lack of melatonin and serotonin and a disruption in circadian rhythms are the main causes.

Melatonin is a hormone that regulates the body’s sleep-wake cycle. During the dark months, less melatonin is produced, which can lead to sleep problems and general tiredness. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter that affects mood, may also be present in lower amounts, increasing depressive symptoms.

A promising form of therapy is light therapy, in which patients are exposed to bright light for a certain period of time every day. This treatment is intended to compensate for the natural lack of daylight and stimulate the production of melatonin and serotonin. Initial studies show that this method could be effective not only for SAD, but also for other forms of depression.

Light therapy could represent a cost-effective alternative to conventional antidepressants with few side effects. However, experts emphasize that further research is needed to understand the exact mechanisms and long-term effectiveness of this form of therapy. Nevertheless, it already offers many sufferers new hope for relief from their symptoms.
