MEXICO.- Each November 25the world once again focuses on one of the most serious and persistent problems: violence against women. Although important progress has been made, millions of women and girls continue to face physical, psychological, sexual, economic and digital attacks.
It is for this reason that this date seeks not only to make reality visiblebut also demand firm action that allow us to build safer and more egalitarian societies.
Around the world, every November 25th is commemorated International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Womenofficially decreed by the UN in 1999.
The day was chosen in honor of the Mirabal sisters -Patria, Minerva and María Teresa-, Dominican activists murdered in 1960 by the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. Their bravery and struggle made them a symbol of resistance against oppression and violence, and their legacy inspired the creation of this commemorative date.
Why is the color orange used on November 25?
The use of the color orange is not accidental: it is part of the JOIN campaignlaunched by the Secretary General of the United Nations Organization (HIM) and promoted by UN Women.
According to these institutions, orange represents a bright future, optimistic y free of violencewhich is why it was adopted as an international symbol of the fight against all forms of gender violence.
What does the color orange mean?
According to UN Womenorange symbolizes:
- Hope and optimism
- A future without violence for women and girls
- Energy and visibility to mobilize society
The campaign “Paint the world orange” seeks to illuminate areas of the city, wear orange clothing or ribbons and fill digital spaces with that color to generate public conversation and call to action.
The 25th of every month in Mexico is Orange Day
It should be noted that the Orange Day the day is celebrated 25th of each month and also mobilize both public opinion and governments to adopt concrete measures that transform the reality of millions of women.
In Mexico, both CNDH like the CONAVIM have adopted the Orange Day in their institutional work. Every month, these institutions invite the population to wearing orange clothing, ribbons or bowsilluminate emblematic buildings, decorate public spaces with allusive motifs, and promote information and reflection through social networks and community forums.
