SAN JOSÉ.- Costa Rica thrashed 4-1 Nicaragua and he got fully into the fight for a direct place in the 2026 World Cup that will be defined in November in the last two days of the Concacaf qualifiers.
Two goals from Alonso Martínez, one from Manfred Ugalde and another from Francisco Calvo gave the victory to the Mexican coach’s team. Miguel Herrera against the Nicaraguan team, which tied momentarily with a goal from Junio Arteaga.
With two rounds left to play in Group C, Costa Rica and Piojo Herrera have reached the playoff zone by placing second in Group C with 6 points, the product of one victory and three draws. Only below Honduras, which with its victory over Haiti by a score of 3-0 has reached the top with 8 points (two wins / 2 draws) with a goal difference of +5.
Only the first place will qualify directly for the World Cup, while the second place will play in an intercontinental play-off for two places.
With two points behind Honduras, Miguel Herrera will have to win both matches to directly qualify for the World Cup 2026where it will reach 12 points and Honduras will only add 11 points, if they win against the Nicaraguans on the penultimate day of CONCACAF.
