Anti-immigration activists abound in Europe who preach gospels of lovelessness [de raízes antigas] to others, especially if they are of a different color, religion or culture, catalyzed by social networks that ride on fear and cultivate hatred to increase engagement.
We are at the dawn of the most important wave of immigration on the way – that of AI, today [poucas] practically only digitally, tomorrow in unlimited numbers and also incorporating autonomous humanoid robots.
The immigrants this time will not be human beings, arriving in rickety boats without visas or trying to cross the border in the middle of the night. Today it’s social media algorithms and generative AI bots, tomorrow it will be millions of AI agents capable of writing better than us, lying better than us and traveling at the speed of digital data transfer without needing visas.
Like human immigrants, they will bring both benefits and problems. We will have AI doctors helping healthcare systems, AI teachers supporting education and even AI border guards dealing with human immigration.
Many of the problems pertaining to human immigration will certainly apply to AI immigration. These AI agents will take jobs. They will completely change the culture, including art, religion, personal relationships. And they will have dubious loyalties, likely serving companies or governments in the US or China rather than the countries where they operate.
Strictly speaking, the issue already arises in the present phase of “large language models” (LLM) – Artificial Intelligence systems trained with massive volumes of data and “machine learning” techniques (machine learning) to understand and generate human language – and in relation to controlling AI infrastructure.
Interestingly, whether in the appropriation of European data and metadata, or in the control by foreign entities of AI infrastructure – both essential domains for preserving sovereignty or technological autonomy – the zealots of far-right anti-immigration parties adopt a thick silence. Don’t they realize that the number of AI agents operating in Europe could soon be in the millions?
The topic of AI is the subject of daily analysis and debate on all communication platforms. Why does the entry of huge numbers of AI agents created across borders, with dubious loyalties and capable of promoting profound reforms in the social fabric, not deserve any criticism from anti-immigration pyromaniacs? The answer is probably rooted in the footprint of money. Who benefits from the appropriation of European data and metadata and the penetration of AI agents into the European market? American technology companies and oligarchs, associates and financiers of Trump and their comintern fascist to Europe.
