Hoops Hoops senior Faith Heritage becomes new career scoring leader, surpasses brother in historic milestone

Faith Heritage Boys Basketball Senior Westin Retzos was on a special night.

The Saints hosted Manlius Pebble Hill and Retzos was on the verge of becoming the school’s new scoring champion.

The senior did so after scoring 26 points in Faith Heritage’s 76-31 win over the Trojans.

“It’s an incredible accomplishment,” Faith Heritage coach Jason Awad said. “He works hard every day and it pays off.

Westin, who has been on the Saints varsity team since eighth grade, now has 1,673 career points. He walked past his brother, Aiden Retzosas the new scoring leader.

Aiden is in his second season as an assistant coach for Faith Heritage. As a 2021 graduate, Aiden has 1,670 career points.

“I’ve been blessed to coach them both. Aiden has been a great mentor to Westin. They work together, day in and day out,” Awad said. “Aiden gave Westin the ball tonight. It was amazing and really beautiful to see Westin achieve this feat.”

Westin broke his brother’s record in the second half. When Westin fouled out, he hit back-to-back free throws to outscore his brother.

As soon as the final free throw was made, Aiden waited outside the bench to congratulate Westin.

“There were times when (Westin’s) energy was unmatched. He’s the fastest young man on the court,” Awad said.

Awad argued that while Retzos has more than 1,600 points in his career, the senior is far from a one-dimensional player.

“He jumps into passing lanes, gets steals and transition buckets,” Awad said. “He gets his teammates involved as much as he can. He just brings everything to the game.”

Retzos, a 2024-25 All-Central New York small school boys basketball selection, hit a trio of 3-pointers and converted several free throws.

Landon Bregou scored 19 points for the Saints.

“It was a team effort with a lot of energy,” Awad said. “We were able to get some pressure (on MPH) and get some easy buckets. From there, the defense was able to turn some things into transition baskets.”

Tyler Wladys led the Trojans with seven points.

Faith Heritage (3-2) will take on Beaver River in the OHSL/Frontier League Shootout Saturday at 5:15 p.m. at Onondaga Community College.

MPH (0-5) hosts McGraw on Monday at 7 p.m
