Several tens of thousands of people gathered on Saturday April 18 in the May Square in Buenos Aires (Argentina) to attend an extraordinary performance: a rave party, with Portuguese priest Guilherme Peixoto at the helm. He became famous for his “techno masses” around the world.

A festive tribute to Pope Francis

For more than two hours, on this emblematic square, the atmosphere was festive. This free concert paid tribute to Pope Francis, one year after his death, with light shows, monumental projections and sound clips, all carried by electro pulsations. A symbolic tribute, in front of the square of the cathedral of which Jorge Bergoglio was archbishop for fifteen years, before becoming pope in 2013. He never returned to Argentina until his death on April 21, 2025.

In front of a crowd estimated between 30,000 and 50,000 people, the priest performed sets, mixing electronic pieces and musical references, while broadcasting messages of peace. “The idea is that young people leave happy, with the desire to change the world,” he explained ahead of the event. In the audience, there were mainly young people.

The City of Buenos Aires will have its defects, but you get a marathon, an exhibition by an F1 racer, a philharmonic in front of the planetarium and a DJ priest in Plaza de Mayo. It’s really not a common thing. pic.twitter.com/YbuXHuzFGw

A DJ priest

This mixture of spirituality and music has become the signature of the Portuguese priest. Originally from Guimarães, he is today a parish priest in Braga, Portugal. For several years, he has performed in many cities around the world. An approach which earned him the support of Pope Francis, who invited him to participate in World Youth Day 2023.

“I have always loved music. At the seminary, with the young people of my parish, it was normal for me,” explained Father Guilherme, jovial and plump in his fifties. “I never felt that, because I was in the seminary, I shouldn’t do this or that, or go out in the evening. At 18, we created a pop-rock group…” It was when he started organizing karaoke in the 2000s in his parish, to raise some funds, that he gradually began to mix, then to develop a techno culture. The pandemic then marked a turning point, with the production of streams and sets that went viral.
