The government of Mexico rejected the breaking of diplomatic relations announced by Peru, for having given political asylum to Betsy Chávez, who was the highest ranking person when Pedro Castillo was removed from the Peruvian presidency and is in the Mexican embassy in that country.
Roberto Velasco, undersecretary for North America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed rejection of “the decision made by the government of Peru to break diplomatic relations with Mexico, but not consular relations, because we are acting peacefully and with a humanitarian sense.”
The undersecretary clarified that Mexico will continue to “defend the humanist tradition, acting in accordance with international law, which naturally, in addition, this is a decision of the government of Peru that we do not share, but the friendship between the people of Mexico and Peru continues,” he assured.
He explained that Mexico decided to grant asylum to Betsy Chávez, due to alleged political persecution and being a victim of violations of her rights.
Pablo Monroy Conesa, general director for South America and former Mexican ambassador to Peru, assured that “Mexico does not and has not intervened in Peru’s internal affairs.”
He said his action is a decision of principle and is consistent with his asylum history.
