The Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States, Markwayne Mullin, reported this Thursday that the acting director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service, Todd Lyons, presented his letter of resignation, amid the deaths of migrants in ICE custody.
Lyons was also in charge, during his position, of supervising the mass deportation plan ordered by Donald Trump, putting him in the eye of the storm when immigration raids intensified.

Mullin called Tood Lyons “a great leader,” and added that he will officially step down on May 31.
Trump appointed Lyons as acting director of ICE in March 2025.
Before his departure from office was made public, the official testified before a House of Representatives Appropriations subcommittee where he was questioned about the deaths of around 50 migrants in ICE custody; as well as about the agency’s future plans regarding detention issues.
Likewise, in a hearing at the Department of Homeland Security, Lyons defended the work of ICE and said “the president entrusted us with mass deportations, and we are fulfilling that mandate.”
Lyons was in charge of the massive raids ordered by former Homeland Security Secretary Kristy Noem, which even led to the deaths of two American citizens in Minneapolis, at the hands of immigration agents.

Lyons’ departure comes a month after Gregory Bovino, the face of Trump’s immigration raids, resigned from the Border Patrol over the violent operations in Minneapolis.
So far it is unknown who will replace Lyons as interim, although the position has been vacant by an official since the government of Barak Obama.
