Comedian Bill Cosby was found guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in 1972 and ordered to pay her compensation of almost 60 million dollars, around 51 million euros.
The decision was made on Monday, March 23, by a California court jury after almost two weeks of trial. First, in a session during the morning, they awarded the victim 19.15 million dollars (about 16.5 million euros) for past and future damages; and later, during the afternoon, they decided on another compensation of 40 million dollars (around 34 million euros) for punitive damages. In total, the comedian, currently 88 years old, will have to pay $59.25 million to Donna Mosinger.
“This verdict isn’t just about me – it’s about finally being heard and holding Mr. Cosby accountable,” Motsinger said in a statement. “I have carried the weight of what happened to me for over 50 years. It never goes away. Today, a jury saw the truth and held him accountable. That means everything. I hope this gives strength to other survivors who are still waiting for their moment to be heard,” he added.
Donna Mosinger began the lawsuit against Bill Cosby in 2023 – she had made the first allegations, anonymously, in 2005 -, alleging that in 1972, when she was a waitress at a restaurant in Sausalito, near San Francisco, she was invited by the comedian to watch his show. stand-up in San Carlos, a nearby city. Cosby’s defense claimed that the case was based on assumptions and speculation, since, as the alleged victim herself said, she had no idea what had happened to her.
Among Donna Mosinger’s witnesses was Andrea Constand, an athletic administrator at Temple University, who also accused the actor of sexual assault. That case culminated in Cosby’s conviction in a Pennsylvania criminal court in 2018. However, the state Supreme Court overturned the verdict and Cosby was released from prison after serving nearly three years of a three- to ten-year sentence.
