The CDS-PP parliamentary group wants the Assembly of the Republic to “strongly condemn the extremist and criminal attack against families, children and babies” that took place at the March for Lifelate Saturday afternoon, when a man threw a molotov cocktail against the participants of the protest, next to the Assembly of the Republic.
In a voting project presented this Monday (23), the centrist deputies also want the Assembly of the Republic to “reaffirm the commitment of the State and Parliament to the protection of life, freedom of expression and conscience and the fight against political violence”in addition to welcoming the “quick, prompt and effective intervention” of the security forces and the population present at the scene, “which prevented this criminal act from having dramatic consequences”.
In the text presented by the CDS-PP parliamentary group it is read that the March for Life, “marked by the strong presence of families, children and babies, in an atmosphere of great celebration, music and joy”, was disturbed by a 39-year-old man, “with his face covered, who was accompanied by a group of people”, having thrown a molotov cocktail towards people who “were singing, dancing and talking”.
Although the perpetrator of the attack was unable to light the fuse of the improvised incendiary device, the centrist deputies, whose parliamentary days began this Monday, emphasize that “the gasoline spread over babies, including newborns who were in their parents’ arms, children and adults, who were there peacefully.”
“This extremist attack on innocent families, children and babies reveals intolerable hatred and political radicalism in a Democratic State of Law. Any act of political violence against innocent people must be vehemently condemned, wherever it comes from. Even more so, when the objective of this criminal act was to victimize innocent families, children and babies”, argue the centrists, highlighting that the attack, condemned by the Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, “could have been truly tragic, with several dead and injured people to regret”.
Centrists add, demanding “the most absolute repudiation” of democratic institutions of what happened at the Assembly of the Republic, late Saturday afternoon, that “political violence can never be justified in a free democracy and in a Rule of Law, especially when it is directed against those who gather peacefully to affirm the dignity of human life. And it constitutes “a very serious attack, not only against the specific people who were there, but against a fundamental principle of our democracy: the inviolable respect for life, for the dignity of the human person and for freedom of conscience, expression and association”.
As DN reported this Monday, the Portuguese Federation for Life, promoter of protests against abortion and euthanasia, will request an audience with Luís Neves and defends that the attack be treated as a terrorist act.
