Contemporary Amazonian cinema exhibition arrives in Porto with free screenings at Gato Vadio

Starting this Friday (17), Porto will host the first session of the “Panorama Amazônico” exhibition, which presents to the public a sample of contemporary audiovisual production from the Brazilian Amazon, focusing on works created in Belém do Pará. The initiative brings together different filmmakers and proposes to broaden the view of the region, highlighting a cinematography marked by the encounter between city, river and forest.

A Opening on Friday starts at 9:30 pmat the Gato Vadio space (Rua da Maternidade, 124), with the screening of the documentary There will be no more history without us (2024), by Pará director Priscilla Brasil, who will participate in a chat after the session.

In manifesto format, the film proposes a reflection on the global narratives that shape the perception of the Amazon. From connections between Belém and Munich, the work addresses concepts such as “demographic void” and the exoticization of the forest, at the same time that it exposes historical dynamics associated with colonialism and racism.

The film has already been shown at festivals in Portugal, such as Porto/Post/Doc, and received an Honorable Mention for Best Feature Film at the Seia Film Festival. Still conquered Best Documentary award at the Bali International Film Festival.

The program continues on May 8th, also at 9:30 pm, with the session “Território do Afeto”, dedicated to Amazonian short films. The selection includes the participation of director João Inácio (Shala) and expands the range of productions that present narratives constructed from the territory itself.
