A senior Cuban official assured on Sunday that the communist island prepares for a potential attack by the United States, but he insisted that his country “there is no dispute” con Washington.

“Cuba does not have any dispute with the United States. We do have the need and the right to protect ourselves. But we are willing to sit down” to negotiate, said Fernández de Cossio.
The interview was released as Cuban authorities on Sunday attempt to restore power to the island following the second national blackout in less than a week, with the power grid affected by aging infrastructure and the U.S. oil blockade.

Crises have intensified since the island’s main regional ally and oil supplier, Venezuelan socialist leader Nicolás Maduro, was captured and overthrown in a US military operation in January.
In the interview, recorded in English before the blackout, Fernández de Cossio continued: “We are acting as proactively as possible to address the situation”.
“We hope that the fuel reaches Cuba in one way or another and that this boycott imposed by the United States does not last and cannot be maintained forever.”.
Power has already returned in some parts of Havana, but others remained without power early Sunday. A day earlier, the Ministry of Energy reported a “total disconnection” of the national electrical system in the country of almost 10 million inhabitants.
Since 2024 there have been seven national blackouts, which complicate life in a country in economic crisis. Cubans fear that food will spoil in refrigerators.
United States President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on countries that sell oil to Cuba. Since January 9, the island has not imported crude oil.
