An investigation opened in 2025
Since the purchase of the platform, the social network has been the subject of several reports which led to the opening of an investigation in January 2025 by the Paris prosecutor’s office. According to Franceinfothe investigations concern possible manipulation of the content recommendation algorithm, likely to have been used for the purposes of foreign influence or interference. Suspicions of fraudulent data extraction were also raised.

Justice is also interested in the dissemination of problematic content, in particular denialist remarks relayed by the Grok artificial intelligence. This AI has been accused of having produced anti-Semitic messages and content contesting historical facts linked to the Shoah.
Non-consensual sexualized photomontages
Another sensitive aspect of the investigation, the creation and distribution of non-consensual sexualized photomontages, sometimes targeting minors, generated by artificial intelligence tools. Several reports from elected officials and associations led to the expansion of investigations to offenses linked to the protection of people’s images and the dissemination of child pornography content. The platform is also targeted for cases of identity theft, after the broadcast of falsified videos attributed to press organizations, including Reporters Without Borders.
Always according to Franceinfothe Paris public prosecutor’s office thus evokes a series of possible offenses ranging from manipulation of computer systems to complicity in the dissemination of illicit content. Although foreign interference was mentioned, it was not considered at this stage of the investigation. In this complex matter, the former general director of X, Linda Yaccarino, is also summoned. Justice specifies that the presence of the accused is not essential for the continuation of the investigations. Elon Musk, for his part, denounces accusations that he considers unfounded and contests any irregularity.
