The rehabilitation works on the municipal buildings on Avenida de Ceuta and Rua Maria Pia, in Lisbon, have already been completed and benefited 745 residents, in an investment of more than 4.8 million euros, revealed this Wednesday, March 18, the company Gebalis.
Responsible for managing Lisbon’s municipal neighborhoods, Gebalis indicated that the completion of works on Avenida de Ceuta and Rua Maria Pia “reinforces the pace of execution of the Morar Melhor program, which continues to advance in various parts of the city, consolidating a deep, sustainable rehabilitation strategy oriented towards the real needs of resident communities”.
Launched in June 2023, The Morar Melhor program foresees the rehabilitation of 33 municipal neighborhoods and the works must be completed by the end of this year, with a total budget of 142 million euros (ME). Initially, the Lisbon City Council determined an investment of 42 ME, but later, another 100 ME were approved, including European funds from the PRR – Recovery and Resilience Plan.
In a statement, Gebalis said that on Avenida de Ceuta, in the Vale de Alcântara neighborhood, the eight buildings of this municipal district were intervened, covering 205 units and 574 residentsin a total investment of 3.1 ME, with the central objective of “correcting accumulated pathologies, improving the energy and thermal performance of buildings and modernizing their systems, ensuring better health, comfort and use conditions for all residents”.
The contract on Avenida de Ceuta was carried out “over 12 months” and focused on the conservation, repair and restoration of existing buildings, with interventions on the foundations, facades and roofs, as well as the replacement of frames, shutters, lot doors, mailboxes, intercoms and clotheslines, informed the municipal company.
Also on Rua Maria Pia, according to Gebalis, the rehabilitation and conservation contract for the municipal building was completed, specifically in 61 units, directly benefiting 171 inhabitantsin an investment of 1.69 ME, to restore the facades and roofs, as well as replace frames and shutters.
This intervention had an execution period of 13 months and, as with Avenida de Ceuta, the project sought to reinforce energy efficiency, thermal comfort and safety, promoting an effective improvement in habitability and enhancing the urban image of the building complex, according to the company responsible for managing the municipal neighborhoods.
Quoted in a statement, the chairman of the Board of Directors of Gebalis, Fernando Angleu, said that “the completion of these projects demonstrates Gebalis’ ability to carry out, with rigor and responsibility, an unprecedented rehabilitation program in the city of Lisbon”.
Fernando Angleu also pointed out that These interventions “are not limited to transforming the appearance of buildings” and reinforced that these works represent a direct investment in the quality of life of families living in these municipal neighborhoods, “ensuring better conditions of comfort, safety and energy efficiency”.
“This is the purpose of Morar Melhor: to restore dignity to the municipal heritage and create more resilient, more modern and more humane neighborhoods,” he declared.
The Morar Melhor program, promoted between the Lisbon City Council and Gebalis, began in Bairro dos Alfinetes, in Marvila, and continued to the neighborhoods Padre Cruz (Carnide), Boavista (Benfica), João Nascimento Costa (Beato), Telheiras Sul (Lumiar), Rego (Avenidas Novas), Quinta dos Barros (São Domingos de Benfica), Quinta das Laranjeiras (Parque das Nações), Avenida de Berlin (Olivais), Quinta dos Goldsmith (Beato), among others.
