From the headquarters of Midi Libre, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs spoke about the conflicts in the Middle East, the role of France in Europe and foreign interference.
He wants “better known about the Ministry of Foreign Affairs”. Of which act. Jean-Noël Barrot, at the head of French diplomacy, in the government of Sébastien Lecornu, after having previously been in those of Michel Barnier and François Bayrou, has set himself this ambition.
Hence his coming to Montpellier this Friday, at the heart of hot news more than ever, to honor various meetings, one of which passed through the headquarters of Free Midday. Where he met six of our readers, all interested and concerned, in one way or another, by these particularly abrasive subjects.
Six readers of different origins, faiths and opinions, who, before the minister’s arrival, had exchanged for a long time, had listened to each other, all trying, if not to find agreement, at least to hear each person’s argument.
“Intimidate those who would like to attack the image of France”
A serenity which governed the entire hour spent with the minister. Who first said wish “tighten the links between the French and their diplomacy, cultivate a diplo-nation link, as we have been able to cultivate an army-nation link. This is, in my opinion, essential in a world where what happens beyond our borders has never had such an impact on our daily lives”.
It was aimed in particular at “young people who feel that something is not going right and who are called to take responsibility”drawing in particular on its “capacity for indignation and resistance to the brutalization of the world”.
He then returned to the Yadan law: “What I know is that the bill was withdrawn by the group that supported it. The government has indicated that a revised version, which respects our fundamental freedoms, could be examined when the time comes.”
Then Jean-Noël Barrot affirmed his desire to “revolutionize the way in which we communicate to the outside world. The observation is clear: the image of France is attacked from abroad by adversaries who want to weaken us. We have, with the French response account, shown our capacity to deploy counter-offensives on social networks. This has the double advantage of bringing the protest to our adversaries on their territory, but also of intimidating those who would like to attack the image of France.”
How to protect ballot integrity
A subject which particularly interested Chadna Moutoucomarapoulé, a student in language sciences from Montpellier, and to which Jean-Noël Barrot returned by evoking possible and future foreign interference, for example during the Yadan law.
“We have taken all measures to protect the integrity of the municipal and senatorial elections this year. And we stand ready to protect the major elections which will take place next year”he assured first.
Before continuing: “Beyond the protection of the ballots, a fundamental question will be asked of the French in 2027. That of knowing whether we want France to recover so that Europe becomes stronger, sovereign and independent and capable of resisting the pressure of the new empires. Or on the contrary if we choose another path, declinist and Malthusian, the one supported by the extreme right and the extreme left who consider that France is already lost.
There remained therefore, the subject of the presidential election being open, to know if he also intended to be a candidate in this election: “Between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the MoDem of which I am vice-president alongside François Bayrou, I am far too busy to devote myself to anything other than the missions entrusted to me.”
