José Luís Carneiro prioritizes single tickets in the election for federations and municipalities on June 19th and 20th

José Luís Carneiro will take the dates of June 19th and 20th to the National Commission this Sunday – what proposed at a National Secretariat meeting on Wednesday – for the holding of internal elections in PS councils and federations, DN knows. Having to respect the minimum 45 days for calling elections in the party, Carneiro schedules for June the referral of activists who will form an integral part of the next municipal agenda, until 2028.

From what DN found out over the last few days, the secretary general of the PS has called for the discussion of ideas, but encouraging, in each municipality or federation, an image of unity. In other words, the PT member’s expectation is that there may be agreements for single tickets, in order to avoid battles or possible factions. There will, naturally, be several ends of the cycle, as the terms of office in these bodies cannot exceed four elections (eight years).

On the part of the secretary general, there were clear indications, in certain districts, of the importance of finding a unity solution so that the PS can, in the short term, recover municipal councils that it lost in 2025. The DN has started contacts in various parts of the country and there is a widespread conviction that there will be few internal battles. Even so, many of the local presidents have not yet made decisions about the future and whether or not to run for re-election. It is a process that will gain momentum in the coming weeks.

As we know, the National Commission this Sunday (April 19) will have on its agenda the publication of names for the National Secretariat and also for the Political Commission. Francisco Assis publicly assumed his unavailability to continue at the Secretariat. MEP Ana Catarina Mendes, in a similar sense, will also leave the advisory body. Sérgio Sousa Pinto and Pedro Costa, the latter who was one of the proponents of the most critical motion in the last Congress, will also leave.

All of these names are nominated for the National Political Commission, which, as we know, also has suggestions that come from the various PS councils and state federations. From what DN was able to learn, Ricardo Costa, who will run for the Braga federation, will also head to the Political Commission. The presidents of the PS Federation are always represented in this body.

As the DN progresses, Ana Mendes Godinho, former minister of Labor and Social Security, will be in the new National Secretariat, advising Carneiro on matters of tax contributions and labor rights, and Luísa Salgueiro, mayor of Matosinhos, will have an important role in work related to the decentralization of competences and local power. From what it was possible to know, the mayor of Viseu, João Azevedo, was also in the consideration. Filipe Santos Costa, for Economy and Business, and André Moz Caldas, for Justice, will continue as close advisors.

Remember that for the National Political Commission – which is, in turn, the party’s deliberative body between meetings of the National Commission – In addition to the aforementioned Sérgio Sousa Pinto, Francisco Assis, Pedro Costa and Ana Catarina Mendes, Carneiro also has Alexandra Leitão, Marta Temido, Duarte Cordeiro, Mariana Vieira da Silva and Fernando Medina, all with experience in ministries and appointed, at other times, to a prominent position in the PS. In some cases, recommendations from councils directed the appointments, in others Carneiro endorsed invitations, raising awareness of wanting to count on various contributions to adopt reforms for the country.
