Parliament discusses, and votes, this Friday, March 20, a Livre do Livre bill that aims to expand “the scope of measures to support and mitigate the impact of rural fires to include extreme natural phenomena”. To DN, deputy Jorge Pinto guarantees that, “if this Livre proposal had already existed at the beginning of this year, the people who were affected by the storms in the center of the country would already know that a series of things are guaranteed and would not have to wait for a reactive response from the government”.
Livre’s proposal is to extend to extreme natural phenomena what is already established in Decree-Law nº 98-A/2025, of August 24, which provides for “measures to support and mitigate the impact of rural fires”.
According to Jorge Pinto, the party’s mission is to create “a country that has its action based on three main axes: planning, preparation and readiness.”
Regarding the first two axes, which are distinguished by the response time, the Livre parliamentarian talks about the possibility of having “mechanisms on the ground ready to react, but it involves many other things, such as preparing to clean the land, in the case of fires, preparing the areas that are in floodplains”.
Asked why, taking into account the succession of extreme phenomena over recent years, there has not yet been a broad response, the deputy speaks of “multiple” hypotheses, starting with the fact that some parties do not recognize the “concrete impact of climate change”.
“Then, there is, on the part of others, a desire not to invest immediately, because these things have a cost”, he recalls, admitting a long-term concern, because “the cost is always higher”. Still, this initiative stands out.”for the country, for our infrastructures, certainly for our land, for our properties and for our lives, it is the one that is cheapest”.
