Several left-wing figures want to bring together their non-Insoumis camp to meet the French, write a project and nominate a presidential candidate. These elected officials refuse the idea of a primary which risks deepening the divisions in their camp and playing into the hands of the extremes.
“Build 2027”: this is the call launched this weekend by left-wing figures in view of the presidential election. Around the socialist Boris Vallaud, the ecologist Yannick Jadot and the leader of Place publique Raphaël Glucksmann, these elected officials chose the regional daily press to publish a text already signed by around forty personalities including Carole Delga the president of the Occitanie region and Mickaël Delafosse the mayor of Montpellier. “The absolute urgency is first of all to respond to the concerns of the French,” assures Yannick Jadot. For the left to win, there needs to be a project, a vision and not simply to say ‘we are fighting the far right’. »
Boris Vallaud, for his part, evokes a “pluralist and unionist” approach but outside of the Insoumis. The PS deputy from Landes, head of the socialist group in the Assembly, announces a series of meetings in the regions on themes which will feed the future programmatic platform: “The question of housing, education, ecological transition, purchasing power…. We need ideas that are sharp, understandable and likely to improve the lives of the French. »
“Take the tricolor flag from the hands of the RN”
The stated objective is to speak again to the working and middle classes. “It’s not just about blocking the way for the National Rally,” insists Raphaël Glucksmann. We must get out of this tactical game which disconnects politicians from the reality experienced by the French. » The MEP thus wants to “take back the tricolor flag from the hands of the RN” and “reestablish the idea of a strategic State”.
The leader of Place publique does not want a “catalogue of measures” but does not forbid anything: “There are no taboos with us. We must address the question of French identity and there is no reason why security should not be a left-wing issue. »
If the approach is to be as open as possible, it will be without La France insoumise. “We consider that there are not two irreconcilable lefts but on many subjects, for example on Europe, Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s vision has nothing in common with ours. »
The timing chosen is not a coincidence. It comes to collide with the left’s primary project planned for October and defended by Olivier Faure, the first federal secretary of the Socialist Party, and Marine Tondelier, the boss of the Ecologists.
The initiators of “Build 2027” do not want this vote which according to them will cause the left to tear itself apart and play into the hands of the extremes. For Boris Vallaud, “previous experiences have led to division. In 2017, the primary was not a guarantee of momentum. Rather than the left confronting the left, it is better for them to come together. »
A candidate “at the end of summer”
Raphaël Glucksmann also sees no point in a primary. “If at the end of October, while Jordan Bardella and Jean-Luc Mélenchon are in the campaign and talking to the French, the left is talking to the left, we have no chance of winning.”
The call launched this weekend will be followed by a series of trips to the regions and then the finalization of the project. A team will then be put in place to carry out the program.
According to Yannick Jadot, the choice of presidential candidate will come “at the end of the summer, so as not to find ourselves too late”. Optimistic, Boris Vallaud is not worried about this last yet crucial step: “If we were able to come together, to present ten to fifteen structuring proposals, to define the terms of a legislative contract, there is no reason why we should not be able to find a candidate. »
