Privatization of TAP can proceed with a single competitor, guarantees minister Miguel Pinto Luz

The Minister of Infrastructure stated this Tuesday (7 April) that the privatization of TAP could move forward even if only one interested party remains in the competition, ensuring that the Government has the necessary conditions to conduct the process.

Miguel Pinto Luz, who was speaking in parliament, considered it “untimely” to anticipate conclusions on non-binding proposals and rejected future thinking about the result of the competition, indicating that the Government is awaiting Parpública’s report.

“We will wait to find out what these proposals say”, he stated, highlighting that proposals from “two of the largest European groups” continue to be evaluated, referring to Air France-KLM and Lufthansa.

Asked by Livre deputy Jorge Pinto about a possible scenario with just one competitor in the binding phase, he admitted this possibility, arguing that the criterion will be the interest of the State. “If we reach the binding ones and a group appears that respects all dimensions […] and still offers absolutely exceptional value […acho que o] we must do,” he said.

“The objective is to ensure that the operation is carried out safely and transparently, regardless of the number of competitors”, he added.
