PSDB imposes voting discipline on project on gender change in civil registration

Parliament debates initiatives by Chega, CDS-PP and PSD that aim to revoke or amend Law No. 38/2018, which enshrines the self-determination of gender identity and expression.

The PSD proposes the repeal of the 2018 legislation and the return to the 2011 regime, reintroducing mandatory medical validation for changing name and gender in the civil registry.

The PSD parliamentary group’s bill also intends that people between 16 and 18 years old will no longer be able to make this change, whereas in 2018 this became possible as long as it has the authorization of their parents or guardians.

Chega intends to change the name and gender change procedures, invoking the “protection of children and young people”, while the CDS-PP defends the prohibition of puberty blockers and hormonal therapies in children under 18 years of age, within the scope of the treatment of so-called gender dysphoria.

In the opposite direction, the Left Bloc presented a fourth project, which proposes strengthening the current law and establishing a legal framework for its application.
