PSP detained more than three thousand drivers and recorded more accidents in the first quarter

The PSP detained more than three thousand drivers in the first quarter of the year, almost half for driving while drunk, months in which it recorded more accidents and serious injuries, but the same number of deaths, compared to the same period last year.

In a report released this Tuesday, April 14, the Civil Police (PSP) reported 3,206 arrests for traffic crimes in the first three months of the year, 1,510 for drunk driving and 1,033 for driving without a license.

It recorded the same number of fatalities, with 20 deaths in the first three months of the year, but more serious injuries, with 172 registered in 2026 (28 more than the 144 in 2025) and more minor injuries, which rise from 3,960 to 4,050.

With no comparison with the previous year in these data, the PSP also reported that it carried out 5,322 road inspection operations across the country in the first quarter, – equivalent to an average of 59 operations per day -, in which 179,922 drivers were inspected and 598,785 vehicles controlled by radar.

The PSP recorded 56,023 infractions, an average of 622 infractions per day.

“Of the infractions recorded in the same period, we highlight 7,921 for speeding, representing numbers that, in a preventive aspect, deserve special concern on the part of the PSP, since driving at excessive speed continues to be one of the main factors in traffic accidents”reads the PSP statement.

Regarding inspections of drunk driving, the PSP reported 53,342 alcohol tests, which resulted in 2,560 records of excess alcohol, with 1,050 fines and 1,510 arrests for drunk driving.

In the Easter road inspection operation, joint data from the PSP and the Republican National Guard (GNR) revealed a quadrupling in the number of deaths on the road compared to the previous year, with 20 deaths compared to the five in 2025.

There were also 53 serious injuries.

The Ministry of Internal Administration will present a package of strategic measures related to road safety, after 20 people died in accidents during GNR and PSP operations over the Easter period.
