Sean Penn is a strong supporter of Ukraine in the conflict with Russia. In November 2022, he visited the country for the third time and lent an Oscar to the Ukrainian president. “It’s just a symbolic thing,” he told Volodymyr Zelensky. “When they win, bring it back to Malibu,” he said at the time.
Zelensky, on the other hand, gave Sean Penn, who was producing a documentary about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Order of Merit for strengthening relations, supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and helping to popularize the country.
This documentary, titled Superpowerdebuted in the meantime. This is a production about Ukraine centered on the president.
At the Oscars ceremony, on Sunday night (Monday dawn in Lisbon), Sean Penn was honored with his third Oscar for the film Battle After Battledirected by Paul Thomas Anderson. When called to receive the award, no justification was given for his absence. However, on Monday it was reported that he was in Ukraine, and the Ukrainian president later shared an image of the two of them thanking the actor for his support.
