A real estate company was fined 585,000 euros for illegally transforming a building in the 9th arrondissement of Paris into tourist rentals.
The courts imposed a fine of 585,000 euros on a real estate company (SCI) for having transformed a building in the 9th arrondissement into tourist accommodation without authorization.
A record fine
According to The Parisian, it all started with the purchase, at the end of 2022, of a building previously used as a social residence. In the space of a few months, it was completely converted into eleven furnished apartments intended for short-term rental, as offered on Airbnb, without respecting the rules governing the change of use of accommodation.
Seized by the municipality, the Parisian court sanctioned this transformation deemed illegal. The main fine of 445,000 euros was increased to 585,000 euros by several breaches, such as the absence of compulsory declaration for certain accommodation or the refusal to cooperate with the agents responsible for controls.
In addition to the financial sanction, the judge ordered the immediate cessation of the activity. In the event of non-compliance, a daily penalty of 1,000 euros is provided for each accommodation concerned. The company will also have to cover the costs linked to the procedure initiated by the City of Paris.
Reacting to this condemnation, on X, the new mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire, said “Airbnb in Paris, it’s over”.
