Solvay boys basketball searched for answers for almost a month.
The Bearcats did not win from December 18, 2025 against Chittenango. Through it all, however, Solvay managed to remain positive.
The Bearcats’ moment to get back on track came Friday night against Jordan-Elbridge. Chris Nichols scored 22 points to lead the Bearcats to a 71-68 overtime win over the Eagles.
The victory marked a five-game skid for Solvay. During that stretch, Bearcats coach Jim Rolince told his players to consider a “0-0” record for a fresh start in hopes of snapping their losing streak.
“We did some really good things tonight. It was just a team effort,” Rolince said.
Solvay led 38:22 at the break. However, Jordan-Elbridge turned it around in the second half with a 38-22 advantage of its own that tied the game at 60 apiece at the end of regulation.
Once the OT period hit, Solvay rediscovered its position to hold the Eagles at bay and hold on for the win.
“After a good start to the first half, we had to weather the storm,” Rolince said. “We made the adjustments we needed to make, so it was about one player at a time stepping up and finding their identity in this great team win.”
All in all, the triumph got the Bearcats back in the win column.
“It was great. I’m so proud of our guys for showing up today,” Rolince said. “We came out and stayed ready and focused. We stayed positive and played for each other.”
Nichols knocked down five 3-pointers and converted three free throws for the Bearcats.
“He’s a sharp shooter. He hit some big shots that really set the tone,” Rolince said. “Then he had to lock down defensively when Jordan-Elbridge closed him down on defense. Chris’ hot start opened up opportunities for the rest of the team.”
Solvay Vinny Sinko scored 14 points, including eight from the charity stripe. Ryan DiTucci scored all 15 of his points from beyond the arc.
“We shot well from three today,” Rolince said. “We also wanted to make sure we attack the basket from the inside, which we really did.
Rolince gave the junior a special shout out Hector Flores.
“He’s one of the most unselfish teammates I’ve ever seen in my coaching career,” Rolince said. “He’s a guy who doesn’t get a lot of minutes. He didn’t get to play tonight, but he’s an example of what it means to be the best teammate and put the team and others before yourself. The rest of the guys following his lead made it possible for us to be successful today.”
Nolan Brunelle paced the Eagles with 28 points, including 15 from 3-point range and five from the free throw line. Chase Brunelle added 24 points, including nine from the charity stripe.
The Bearcats (5-7) face Mexico on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The Eagles (9-5) take on Homer on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.
