UNITED STATES.– The construction of the black wall border between the United States and Mexico in the Santa Teresa area, in front of Ciudad Juárezis part of a project promoted by the President’s Government Donald Trump which contemplates an approximate investment of 4.5 billion dollars to reinforce security at different points of the border.
Among the characteristics of the new section, the construction of a metal wall painted in black with a matte finish stands out, designed to absorb more heat with solar exposure and thus make it difficult for migrants to climb.
The project, developed in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), foresees the construction of around 230 miles of border barrier, of which 110 kilometers miles will be located between El Paso (Texas), and Ciudad Juárez (Chihuahua), one of the areas with the greatest migratory flow between both countries.
In an interview for EFE, the religious Javier Calvillo pointed out that over the years the different strategies applied by US authorities – such as restrictive immigration programs, security operations and the construction of physical barriers – have not managed to stop the migratory flow on the northern border of Mexico.
“The harder you make your wall or your fences, affect migration moreyou make it more complicated, and in any case, even if the migrant puts up this wall, he will continue to pass.”, he expressed.
Calvillo recalled that at different times Ciudad Juárez has faced episodes of high migratory pressure, when thousands of people gathered around the international bridges waiting to cross into the United States.
According to the Mexican religious, the border tightening measures, including those promoted by state and federal authorities in the United States, have had limited effects in stopping the migration phenomenon.
“They will never be able to stop migration. Why? Because human beings will always think bigger, despite the walls, despite the programs or despite the strategies,” he indicated.
The priest explained that previous experiences, such as the restrictions applied during the pandemic through Title 42 or the ‘Stay in Mexico’ program (MPP), caused many migrants to remain for long periods in border cities or look for more dangerous alternatives to cross.
The religious recognized that Every country has the right to protect its sovereignty and strengthen its border controls, but stressed that the right of people to seek better living conditions must also be considered.
“Each country has every right and every freedom to take care of its sovereignty, to take care of its security, to take care of everything, everything there is, but we must also recognize that the person has every right to move,” he stated.
Finally, he warned that the increase in physical barriers on the border, such as the new sections of wall being built in the region, could increase the level of risk for those trying to cross into US territory.
“No matter how many walls they put up, no matter how many strategies they put in place, they will never be able to overcome the intelligence or the will, or above all the strength that the migrant has to seek a better life for himself, for his family,” he concluded.
