The Vice President of the United States expressed “pride” in the Donald Trump administration’s decision to suspend funding and arms shipments to Ukraine.
JD Vance’s position was made known on Tuesday (April 14) during an event in Athens, Georgia. “I continue to believe that, obviously. It’s one of the things I’m most proud of in this administration. We’ve told Europe that if they want to buy weapons, they can do so, but the United States no longer buys weapons or sends them to Ukraine,” he said.
Since taking office in January 2025, the American president has adopted a change in US policy towards the war in Ukraine, a conflict that has been ongoing for more than four years and that Donald Trump wanted to end in days, a promise he was unable to fulfill.
Unlike his predecessor, Trump has criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, alleging his lack of interest in wanting to end the war, having suspended financing and the direct supply of weapons to Kiev.
It was with Trump’s presidency that the PURL mechanism was launched, the acronym in English for Ukraine’s Priority Requirements List, agreed between the NATO secretary general and the US president. This initiative allows NATO to acquire weapons from stocks Americans to Ukraine, through financing from member states-
In October last year, remember, the Minister of National Defense announced that Portugal would participate with 50 million euros in the US weapons acquisition initiative to make them available to Ukraine.
“We announced that we will invest 50 million euros in PURL, in the same way that we announced that we will invest ten million euros in the British drone initiative […]despite being a British initiative, has invariably fallen on the production of national drones, therefore, it is also an investment in the national defense industry”, stated, at the time, the Minister of National Defense, Nuno Melo.
