The Secretary of Defense of the United States, Pete Hegseth, presented the Greater North America geopolitical doctrine, a concept that redefines the northern hemisphere as a immediate security perimeter under Washington’s leadership and that departs from the notion of On Global, term used to refer to countries historically associated with lower levels of economic development and less influence in international governance.
The announcement took place at the United States Southern Command, in Doral, Florida, the same city where days before Donald Trump gathered 12 allied leaders to launch the so-called Shield of the Americas, during a conference of ministers and secretaries of defense of the Western Hemisphere.

Before his regional counterparts, Hegseth outlined a strategic vision that extends “from Greenland to the Gulf of America and the Panama Canal”, covering the sovereign countries located north of the equator, from Alaska to Guyana.
“Each of these nations is not part of the Global South. It is an immediate security perimeter in this great neighborhood in which we all live”stated the official, who placed the Amazon and the Andes mountain range as natural borders that delimit the strategic responsibilities of the north and the south.
As historical support, Hegseth evoked the Quarter Sphere Defense strategy applied during World War II. “This is what we did in World War II. We will do it again”he pointed out.
Weeks earlier, the US announced the Shield of the Americas, described as “a new great military coalition to eradicate criminal cartels“The initiative brought together the presidents of 12 ideologically related countries in Miami, who signed an agreement to combat organized crime.
