What awaits Europe with the arrival of the Hungarian Magyar?
It seems that the door is opening to a period of hope for – a population exhausted by corruption, and – for Brussels and the European capitals, which have been dragged into the clash again and again.
With Orbán’s departure, the populist laboratory that has inspired the generation of ultra leaders who operate under one premise disintegrates: only they can protect the interests of their country. And this, now, doesn’t work.
A new scenario is opening up in foreign policy: although Hungary, which barely represents 1% of European GDP, has time and again blocked key decisions, such as, for example, the disbursement of 90,000 euros to Ukraine.
Magyar, without being a kyiv enthusiast, is more pragmatic, a peremptory quality for a club, the European one, that works by consensus.
With a two-thirds majority, Tisza’s party has room to dismantle the empire, the kingdom, that Orbán created, colonizing the public media and perverting the judicial system.
It should therefore be a matter of time before Hungary returns to democratic normalization and becomes, for the first time in 16 years, a reliable partner worthy of the values that Europe defends.
