Samsung Removes Messaging App

NEW YORK (AP) — Samsung said on its website that its Samsung Messages text messaging app will be available next July.

In the meantime, owners of Samsung smartphones and other devices should switch to Google Messages “to maintain a coherent messaging experience on Android.”

All Samsung Galaxy phones run Google’s Android operating system. To switch to Google Messages, Samsung’s website instructs users to download the app from the Play Store if you don’t already have it on your phone and configure it according to predetermined settings. Some people may also receive an in-app notification to guide you through the process.

Samsung says the switch to Google Messages will give users access to the latest features, such as Google’s latest Gemini AI features – which includes an experimental feature called Remix to generate images during conversations and quick AI-suggested replies – as well as the ability to share top-quality photos between Android and Apple iOS devices via RCS-enabled messages.

Users of older Android operating systems (Android 11 or earlier) will not be affected by the end of Samsung Messages, the company warns. To confirm which Android operating system is installed on your Samsung device, open Settings, click “Software Information” and download “Android Version”.

However, owners of the latest Samsung Galaxy 26 phone series and other new phones cannot download the Samsung Messages app from the Galaxy Store.

The company said that after it was officially discontinued in July, no device will be able to download Samsung Messages. Samsung said users can check the app to find out the exact version when the service will be available offline.

In the United States, Samsung did not specify its indications for Samsung Messages were the same as worldwide.
