Actress Susan SarandonGoya internacional 2026, was enthusiastic about this vision to highlight the “moral clarity” of Spain, a country capable of condemning situations such as those occurring in Gaza.
“When we see your moral clairvoyance, it means a lot to us” in EE.UU., the 79-year-old actress said in a sweet voice when meeting the media with the reason for the award she will receive this Saturday at the 40th annual Goya gala.
“I come from a place of censorship and repression, to a country with the status of Spain and important to the people of the EE.UU. You are less alone,” commented the actress in a white jacket dress and a symbol of support for Palestine in the form of a red hand in the sun.
Sarandon criticized the political situation in his country and contrasted it with Spain, a country where it is possible to raise one’s voice in front of international problems, as actors like Javier Bardem do, he mentioned.
“It’s indescribable how important it is for people who are trying in such a difficult environment to have strength and moral clarity, what it means to us,” Sarandon said for those, “Spain and with the support they are toasting in Gaza (…), you feel like you have hope,” he added.
So he also declared that Sánchez is “on the right side of history” and, in a more relaxed tone, said that the Spanish president is “good and tall”, noting that this Saturday will coincide with the Goya gala. “The quiz will give you more information,” he noted.
For the actress, “silence is very dangerous, we have to be able to say what we think until we are happy without wanting to cooperate”. On the other hand, she noted that her words in defense of the rights of the Palestinian people provoked the major Hollywood talent agency, United Talent Agency, to break their contract with her.
Sarandon added that “it’s a myth that Hollywood is struggling” and it’s an industry that doesn’t really protest “when things get tough.” “Hollywood doesn’t have a political side. Hollywood cares if you get old, it doesn’t care if you get angry. But if your movie is funny, it doesn’t care,” he said.
And this has to be weighted by the fact that, in his opinion, “all films are political” because “we are good at subverting the status quo or the themes that we call and we call them political when we lose it,” said the protagonist of the film Thelma and Louise, Death penalty or Atlantic City.
Therefore, he expressed himself against the Berlinale’s decision to try to maintain a neutral position towards the Palestinian conflict.
Sarandon said that for her happiest moments, she joined her family vividly and continued as an actress, not an activist, which did not prevent her from constantly being in places where she felt she had a moral obligation to be.
“I don’t have a choice with activism, I think it’s necessary when people don’t have a voice, and it’s my duty to give them a voice,” he told his audience.
