The number of bankruptcy declarations in the European Union (EU) rose 2.5% in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to the previous quarter, according to data published today by the community statistical service, Eurostat.
In information released this Monday, the 16th, Eurostat points out that “the number of bankruptcy declarations increased by 2.5% compared to the third quarter of 2025”.
Eurostat reports that bankruptcies rose in six of the eight sectors of the business economy between October and December 2025.
The most significant increases were recorded in accommodation and food, with an increase of 8.6%, followed by the information and communication sector (+7.9%) and transport (+5.6%).
On the other hand, commerce (-3.4%) and financial activities (-0.7%) were the only sectors to show a reduction in the number of bankruptcies in the period under analysis.
Still in the last quarter of last year, registrations of new companies in the EU grew by 0.5% compared to the third quarter of 2025, with increases in five of the eight sectors, highlighting information and communication (+6.4%) and industry (+4.9%).
