Another Mexican migrant dies in ICE custody: SRE demands justice and immediate measures

Tragedy hits the migrant community in the United States again. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) confirmed the death of a Mexican citizen while he was in the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) in the state of Louisiana.

This death once again raises alarm bells about the conditions in American detention centers, adding one more victim to a figure that continues to grow so far this year.

WHO WAS THE DECEASED MIGRANT?

According to local media reports and consular confirmation, the victim was identified as Alejandro Cabrera Clemente, 49 years old. Alejandro had been deprived of his liberty since early January 2026 at the Winn Correctional Center, located in Winnfield, Louisiana.

To date, the exact causes of his death remain under investigation. The Mexican Career Consulate in New Orleans has already activated assistance protocols to contact family members and provide the necessary legal support.

AN ALARMING FIGURE: 16 DEATHS SO FAR IN 2026

The death of Cabrera Clemente is not an isolated event. This is the second death of a Mexican in less than a month in immigration custody, after the death of another Mexican on March 25 in Los Angeles.

So far in 2026, the number of Mexican migrants who have died in ICE detention centers has risen to 16 victims.

Faced with this scenario, the Mexican Foreign Ministry issued a forceful statement:

  • Unacceptable: The SRE described the repetition of these deaths as “incompatible with human rights standards.”
  • Serious deficiencies: The Government of Mexico points out systemic failures in the protection of life within ICE facilities.
  • Consular Action: The network of consulates in the US has been instructed to redouble efforts and conduct daily visits to detention centers.

MEXICO DEMANDS RESPONSES AND REINFORCES PROTECTION

The Government of Mexico, through its legal services and legal advisory programs, analyzes the legal actions to follow together with the family of Alejandro Cabrera. The demand is clear: fully clarify the facts and determine the responsibilities of the relevant authorities.

WHERE TO GO IN CASE OF DETENTION?

The SRE reminded the Mexican community abroad that they have constant support regardless of their immigration status. If you or a family member require assistance, you can contact:

  • Mexican Consular Support Line: 520.623.7874
  • The Mexican consulate closest to your jurisdiction.

Diplomatic commitment: The Mexican State reaffirmed that it will use all available legal channels to ensure the dignity of its citizens abroad, ensuring that no death in custody is left without a thorough investigation.
