COP mourns the death of Joaquim Granger, the oldest Portuguese Olympic athlete

Joaquim Granger, the oldest Portuguese Olympian and pioneer of national artistic gymnastics, died on Friday, aged 97, the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) said today in a statement.

“The Portuguese Olympic Committee expresses its deepest regret at the death of Joaquim Granger, the oldest Portuguese Olympian, pioneer of national artistic gymnastics and one of the five athletes who represented Portugal at the debut of the sport at the Helsinki Olympic Games, in 1952”, highlighted the COP, in a note in which the date or cause of death is not disclosed.

The historic athlete was part of the first men’s artistic gymnastics team that represented Portugal at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland, in 1952.

“The greatest figure in the history of Portuguese Olympism, Joaquim Granger leaves a legacy of dedication to sport, training and teaching, having been distinguished by the Faculty of Human Motricity as a distinguished student, teacher and gymnastics coach”, highlighted the COP.
