Donald Trump promises economic aid to Hungary if Orbán is re-elected

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said this Friday, April 10, that he is ready to “use all the American economic power to strengthen Hungary’s economy” if Viktor Orbán is re-elected prime minister on Sunday.

“My administration stands ready to use all of American economic power to strengthen Hungary’s economy, as we have done for our great allies in the past, if Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the Hungarian people ever need it,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social network.

According to Trump, his government is “excited to invest in the future prosperity that will be generated by Orbán’s continued leadership.”

In power since 2010, Orbán faces a ‘trial by fire’ on Sunday, as he starts, in the polls, behind the opposition leader, Péter Magyar, of the Tisza party.

US Vice President JD Vance traveled to Budapest during the campaign and spoke at one of Orbán’s rallies.

Sunday’s Hungarian elections are expected to mark a shift in the country to the right, with polls indicating that the parliament can integrate only three parties, with the Nossa Pátria movement (far-right) taking on a decisive role.

Polls attribute the victory to the opposition party Tisza (center-right), led by Péter Magyar, which would remove Orbán’s Fidesz from power.

However, political analysts did not risk anticipating the result due to the complex Hungarian electoral system, which benefits the party in power, following successive legislative changes promoted by Orbán.
