Eight children, aged between one and 14, died in the early hours of Sunday in a shootout in the city of Shreveport, in Louisiana, southern United States, according to information provided by local police.
According to authorities, the incident, described as a “domestic altercation”, also left two people injured, both adults, and one of the victims is in serious and life-threatening condition. In total, ten people were hit by gunfire.
The suspect, identified as the sole perpetrator of the shooting, fled in a stolen vehicle after the attack and was later shot down by police forces during a chase, revealed Shreveport police spokesman Christopher Bordelon.
The identities of the victims and suspect have not been released at this time. However, authorities indicated that several of the children killed were descendants of the alleged shooter.. The investigation is still at an early stage, with police emphasizing that the information available is preliminary.
In statements cited by the EFE agency, the mayor of Shreveport, Tom Arceneaux, classified the episode as “a tragic situation, perhaps the most tragic we have ever experienced”, lamenting the devastating impact of the attack on the local community.
