The Lisbon Mobility and Parking Company (EMEL) is evaluating the possibility of doing away with parking meters in the city and charging for parking only digitally.
And the company confirmed to Public which is carrying out a study to understand user habits and determine expectations and level of acceptance of this change. After having these conclusions, you should start a pilot project in an area of the city.
The measure would reduce the costs of installing and maintaining parking meters and is in line with what appears to be a trend: in recent years, drivers have increasingly paid for parking digitally, using the EMEL or Via Verde application. In 2025, this was the method used in 74% of payments made, according to the newspaper
Since May 2024, according to Público, EMEL has already removed 225 parking meters from the streets of Lisbon.
