An Iranian state television presenter announced today, at 05:00 local time (01:30 GMT), in tears, the death of the ayatollah Ali Khamenei, supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who had been in power for 36 years.
Iranian television did not specify under what circumstances Ali Khamenei died at the age of 86, nor did it mention Saturday’s Israeli and American attacks on his residence in Tehran. Photos and archive images are transmitted with a black stripe on the screen as a sign of mourning.
Iran today decreed a 40-day mourning period, as well as seven days of public holidays, following the death, at the age of 86, of the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Ali Khamenei, in power since 1989.
“With the martyrdom of the supreme leader, his path and his mission will not be lost or forgotten; on the contrary, they will be pursued with more vigor and zeal,” declared a state television presenter.
As news emerged about the religious leader’s death, eyewitnesses in Tehran told the Associated Press that some residents were celebrating, blowing whistles and shouting.
This Saturday night Donald Trump wrote yesterday on the social network Truth Social that “Khamenei is dead”, confirming the death of Iran’s supreme leader. “Khamenei, one of the cruelest people in history, is dead”, Trump begins the publication. “This is not just Justice for the people of Iran, but for all Great Americans, and for the people of many Countries around the World, who were killed or maimed by Khamenei and his band of bloodthirsty THUGS. He was unable to avoid our Intelligence and our Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems, and, working closely with Israel, there was nothing he, or the other leaders who were killed along with him, could do,” continues.
The United States and Israel yesterday launched an attack on Iran following negotiations to put an end to Iran’s nuclear program. Iran responded with missiles against targets in Israel and US military bases in several Middle Eastern countries.
