The maritime transport sector is expected to reach 1,500 million euros in revenue in 2025 in Portugal, representing a growth of 6% compared to the previous year, revealed this Tuesday, 14th, an analysis by Informa D&B.
Taking 2024 figures into account, freight traffic in Portuguese ports reached 85.6 million tons, 4.3% more than in 2023, while the volume of loaded goods grew 9.1%, with a moderate increase in unloading (1.5%).
Passenger traffic, excluding cruise ships, totaled 1.92 million people, 1.3% less than in 2023, concentrated almost entirely in the Azores and Madeira archipelagos.
On cruise ships, the number of passengers rose to 1.82 million, 8.7% more than in 2023.
The number of operators providing maritime passenger transport services maintained the growing trend started in 2021 in 2024, remaining at 286 (6.7%), while in maritime cargo transport it fell to 81, 4.7% less compared to 2023.
The fleet of Portuguese-flagged merchant ships confirmed the expansion trend in 2025, totaling 1,190, 14.6% more than in 2024.
Regarding the age of the fleet of Portuguese-flagged merchant ships, 53% of the vessels are between 11 and 20 years old, while close to 17% of the ships are less than 5 years old and 14.5% are between 6 and 10 years old.
In this sense, “the positive evolution has continued since 2022, as a result of the increase in the mobility of people and goods and domestic and foreign tourist demand”, said Informa D&B.
