Afghanistan was the target of air strikes by Pakistan this Sunday, February 22. According to the Pakistani Ministry of Information, “selective operations” took place against seven camps across the border separating the two countries.. At least 17 people died. Another six are missing.
The attacks come in response to Afghanistan’s recent offensive against Pakistan, for which the Pakistanis blame the military forces present in those camps. About two weeks ago, a bomb attack on a Shiite mosque in Islamabad (capital of Afghanistan) killed 32 people and injured 170 others. It was aimed at the Pakistani Talibanalso identified with the acronym TTP, together with their respective affiliates.
In response, Pakistan attacked “camps and hideouts”as they described themselves, located in Afghan territory. Pakistan blames them for the suicide attack.
Afghanistan promises to fight back
In a statement, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense classified Pakistan’s attacks as “a violation of international law and the principles of good neighborliness”, in a statement. Therefore, it promises “a considered and appropriate response”, which leads us to believe that the tension is far from reduced.
