Portuguese football surpasses 1100 million euros in revenue for the first time

1133 million euros in revenue. This is the value of Portuguese football revenue in 2024/25. According to the yearbook revealed by Liga Portugal, “for the first time, the 1100 million euro mark was surpassed”. Unsurprisingly, the business involving the sale of players continues to be what most fuels the football industry, with funds resulting from athlete transfers reaching 636 million euros, an increase of almost 50% compared to the value recorded in the previous season’s yearbook.

“These data reinforce Professional Football as a more robust sector and prepared to face the challenges that lie ahead. It is not just a question of growth, but above all of consolidation. Professional Football is increasingly asserting itself as a strategic activity for the country, with quantifiable economic and social impact and a clear ambition to continue evolving”, said Reinaldo Teixeira, president of Liga Portugal.

According to the document, professional football – I Liga and II Liga, both organized by Liga Portugal – generated 288 million euros in taxes for the State and contributed 956 million to the GDP, and in 2023/24 it had generated 662 million.

The number of jobs associated with professional football rose 39%, reaching 6,163 people, which, according to the body that governs professional championships, “reflects the expansion of the activity and the role of football as a generator of employment”. This also increased personnel costs to 457 million euros, with the largest share being the responsibility of the players’ payroll, totaling 303 million euros in salaries. Coaches cost clubs 50 million in wages and employees 104 million.

Liga Portugal reached “a new revenue record”, of 30.2 million, an increase of 3.8% compared to the previous season, with the organization ending the year with a positive net result of 231 thousand euros.
