WASHINGTON (EFE).— El failure of negotiations in Islamabad to put an end to the iran war and the electoral defeat of Viktor Orbán in Hungarya close ally of the White House, represent a double setback for the Vice President of the United States, James Vance, who was personally involved on both fronts.
The number two of the Donald Trump Administration returned to Washington on Sunday empty-handed after leading the highest-level contact with Iran in decades and becoming involved in the Orbán’s failed electoral campaign.
Vance, the favorite in polls to succeed Trump as the Republican presidential candidate in 2028, had until now maintained a low profile in foreign policy, but the last week made him the face of resounding failures.
uncomfortable war
Vance was chosen to lead the American delegation which met on Saturday at Islamabad with Iranian authorities, in an attempt to find a way out of the war started by United States and Israel last February 28.
According to leaks to local media, once Trump made the decision to attack Iran, Vance asked the Iranian government to quickly decapitate it, but the conflict stalled and has caused serious economic disruption after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Vance found himself in Pakistan, accompanied by envoys from the Casa Blanca Steve Witkoff y Jared Kushner, sitting in front of Iranian representatives such as the president of Parliament, Mohamed Baqer Alibaf, in the highest-level talks since 1979.
But after more than 20 hours, Vance failed to reach an agreement with Iran, a country he blamed for the failure because, he said, it is not willing to give up its nuclear ambitions.
bad omen
Before traveling to Pakistan, Vance stopped in Hungary to support Orbán, the main ally of Trumpism in Europe and who arrived at the polls weakened after 16 years in power.
In an unprecedented gesture, the American vice president participated in a rally of the ultranationalist president, in which he called to vote for him and praised his anti-immigration policy and his confrontation with “the bureaucrats” of Brussels.
But the bet didn’t work: Orbán was defeated by Péter Magyar, with a pro-European profile, when Vance was already flying back to Washington after the frustrated Islamabad summit.
