PSD and Chega guarantee four seats and PS elects only Carlos César in the Assembly of the Republic

The election for the five representatives of the Legislative Assembly in the Council of State had the expected resulttaking into account the number of deputies from the proposing parties, with the joint PSD and Chega slate electing four representatives (Leonor Beleza, André Ventura, Carlos Moedas and Pedro Duarte), while the PS slate only nominated the head of the ticket, Carlos César.

With the vote for the Council of State, integrated in the election of external bodies, which was marked by the failure in the election of Tiago Antunes (nominated by the PS) for the Ombudsman’s Office, following the Hondt method, it would be enough for the PSD, Chega, Initiative Liberal and CDS-PP benches to have no dissent to prevent the election of the PS’s second list, which was the former Minister of Justice, Francisca Van Dunem.

With the results of the vote, which have not yet been officially announced, Leonor Beleza remained in the consultative body of the Presidency of the Republic, until now appointed by the former Head of State, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the leader of Chega, André Ventura, and the mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas. New will be the president of the Porto Chamber, Pedro Duarte, while Carlos César also remains on the Council of State.

In the previous legislature, the Assembly of the Republic elected, on a single ticket, Pinto Balsemão and Carlos Moedas (PSD), Pedro Nuno Santos and Carlos César (PS) and André Ventura (Chega). The then general secretary of the PS stopped responding to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s calls when he left the party leadership and the founder of the PSD passed away last year.

The advisory body of the Presidency of the Republic will meet this Friday for the first time since Antônio José Seguro took office. The current Head of State announced this Thursday that he chose former socialist ministers Alberto Martins and Nuno Severiano Teixeira, the scientist (and his national representative in the presidential elections) Maria do Carmo Fonseca, the former rector of the Portuguese Catholic University Isabel Capeloa Gil and full professor Miguel Bastos Araújo, a specialist in biodiversity.
