At the Lieven Meeting, in France, Salomé Afonso broke the European short track record this Thursday, February 19th. The athlete bet on a race that is not part of the official calendar and is rarely contested, the 2000 meters, having achieved the best European mark.
Australian Jessica Hull won, in 5.26.68 minutes, and further back, in the fight for second place, Salomé Afonso reached the goal in 5.30.31 minutes.
The mark surpasses the national record, set by Fernanda Ribeiro, 5.37.34 in 1996, as expected, but goes further, as it becomes a European record, removing from the list of maximums the 5.30.53, set by Romanian Gabriela Szabo, in 1998.
Hull becomes the second best ever, behind the world record held by Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba (5.23.75) and Salomé Afonso moves up to third place on the historical list.
Patrícia Silva was one of the ‘hares’ hired, taking the race to 1,300 meters at a very good pace, which only Hull was able to follow.
