Multi-award winning actress Meryl Streep accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 74th Golden Globes on Sunday, January 8. In her nearly six-minute acceptance speech, Streep took the time to express her opinions of our newly inaugurated President. News feeds like US Magazine state that President Trump may have finally met his match.

Without ever dropping the name of whom she was speaking, Streep made her target very clear. Rather than the typical ‘thank you’ speech, Streep used her time fight for what she believes in.

Streep stated, “There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it…It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.”

Streep went into further detail pointing out that everyone in the audience is from somewhere different, both from around the country and from the world.

“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick ’em all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts,” she stated, directly attacking President Trump’s stated efforts to decrease the amount of immigration in our country.

Many people gave a standing ovation at the end of Streep’s speech, however, there were those who were not so thrilled.

As stated in the New York Times, “President-elect Donald J. Trump dismissed Meryl Streep as ‘a Hillary lover’ early Monday morning after the actress denounced him as a bully who disrespected and humiliated others.”

When interviewed about his reaction to the speech, he stated that he had not seen it or heard it, however he was “not surprised” that he had come under attack from “liberal movie people.”

President Trump attempted to defend what he had actually intended with his statements, arguing that “people keep saying I intended to mock the reporter’s disability, as if Meryl Streep and others could read my mind, and I did no such thing.”

Later on, President Trump posted a tweet in reply to the acceptance speech. “Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a …..” Leaving the end of the sentence up to our imagination.

In response to Streep’s statements, actress Alyssa Milano wrote, “A true inspiration. Meryl, you beautiful soul. Thank you for using your voice to empower.”

Following suit, actress Anna Kendrick tweeted “Is there anyone better?” with the hashtag “meryl” to show her support.
